Isaac Hirsch was a wealthy builder who commissioned the construction of a new theatre – to give operetta a permanent home in Stockholm. The theatre was named after Sweden’s king at the time, Oscar II.
Many of the country’s greatest performers have trodden the boards at Oscarsteatern. The biggest success ever was Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera. A grand total of 1,173 performances were seen by over a million people.
Since 2004, Oscarsteatern has been jointly operated by Vicky Nöjesproduktion and 2Entertain. Over the years, productions like Sugar, Some Like It Hot, Singin’ in the Rain, Spamalot, As It Is in Heaven, and Rainman have played to full houses.
