About the show

Brokeback Mountain is one of the most widely recognized love stories of our time and will be presented as a stage production at Intiman in Stockholm in autumn 2026. The production is a play with live music, based on the award-winning short story by Annie Proulx, which also inspired the internationally acclaimed and Academy Award-winning film Brokeback Mountain.

This critically acclaimed stage adaptation has previously played to sold-out audiences in West End in London and will have its Swedish premiere on 19 November 2026. The production will run at Intiman throughout the autumn and winter season.

The roles of Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist are performed by Malte Gårdinger and Samuel Astor. On stage, Jill Johnson appears together with her band, performing live music with strong country influences. The music is an integrated part of the production, enhancing both the atmosphere and the storytelling.

The script has been translated and adapted for the Swedish stage by William Spetz, with direction by Sara Giese.

The story is set in Wyoming in 1963, where Jack and Ennis meet while working a seasonal job on Brokeback Mountain. Their relationship develops from friendship into a deeper love, in a time and environment where their feelings are not accepted. After the summer, they return to their separate lives, but continue to meet over the years in brief moments of reunion.

The production explores themes of identity, social norms, and life choices, and how external expectations can shape people’s ability to live openly. Brokeback Mountain at Intiman is a theatrical production where drama and live music come together in a story about relationships, longing, and the consequences of not being able to live life to the fullest.
